Explanation:
The trader whom the Innu call 'Mister Swaffield' had a house on Sango Bay and used to travel up to this lake by dog team. The name probably refers to William Ernst Swaffield who was Post Manager at Davis Inlet from 1891 to 1900. His son Wilfrid apparently also lived in Davis Inlet since his infant son, called William Ernst Swaffield, was buried at Old Davis Inlet in 1921, as stated on his grave stone. The place name nowadays refers to both of the lakes which are joined by a narrow passage. Formerly, it was applied to the southern lake only.
